Production of the EMW 340 began in 1949, originally under the name BMW 340, at the Eisenacher Motorenwerk (EMW) in Eisenach, Thuringia.
The roots of the vehicle lie in the BMW 326, a model from before the Second World War. In 1951, a further developed version was introduced, which was also available as a station wagon.
After the division of Germany and a patent dispute with the BMW factories in Munich, the model was renamed to EMW 340 from July 1, 1952 and continued to be produced until 1955.
